How an implant works
An implant has three parts: the post that sits in the bone, a connector called an abutment, and the crown you see in your mouth. Over a few months the bone grows tightly around the post, which holds it firmly in place. Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth, or support a bridge or denture.
Because an implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, those teeth do not need to be reshaped, as they would for a bridge.
Types of implant treatment
- Single tooth implantOne implant and one crown replace one missing tooth. The teeth on either side are not touched.
- Implant bridgeWhen several teeth in a row are missing, two or more implants can hold a bridge, so you do not need an implant for every tooth.
- Implant-supported dentureTwo or more implants hold a removable denture firmly, so it does not slip when you eat or speak.
- Fixed teeth for a whole jawWhere there is enough bone, a full row of fixed teeth can be held on four to six implants.
Dr. Sara explains which of these suit your mouth and your budget. Our guide to dentures, bridges and implants compares the options side by side.
Who implants suit
Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone can have implants. The dentist checks your bone with X-rays and, where needed, a 3D scan. If there is not enough bone, a bone graft may be needed first. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medicines can slow healing and raise the risk of problems, so please tell the dentist about your health and any medicines you take.
Implants are placed once the jaw has finished growing, so they are not used for children and young teenagers.
How much do dental implants cost in Dubai?
At Healthpoint, a dental implant with its crown starts from AED 3,500 per tooth. The final price depends on the implant system, the number of implants and whether a bone graft or extraction is needed first, which are priced separately. You get a written plan with the full price before treatment, and you can pay in instalments with Tabby or Tamara, subject to their approval.
What goes into the total price
| Part of the treatment | Price at Healthpoint | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation and exam | Free | Always, before you decide |
| Dental X-ray | AED 50 | To plan the implant |
| Removing the old tooth | From AED 100 per tooth | If the damaged tooth is still in place |
| Implant with its crown | From AED 3,500 per tooth | For each implant |
| Bone graft or sinus lift | Priced at your consultation | Only if there is not enough bone |
For example, replacing a broken tooth that is still in your mouth, with a simple extraction and no bone graft, starts from AED 3,600 in total. Our guide to the dental implant cost breakdown explains what to check when you compare quotes.
Not enough bone? Bone grafts and sinus lifts
After a tooth is lost, the bone that held it slowly shrinks. If there is not enough bone left to hold an implant, it can often be rebuilt with a bone graft, either at the same visit as the implant or a few months before.
In the upper back jaw, the sinus sits just above the tooth roots. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus floor and adds bone underneath, so an implant can be placed there. Grafts add time to treatment, often a few extra months of healing, and the dentist tells you before starting whether you need one.
Implant on the day of the extraction?
Sometimes an implant can be placed in the same visit as the extraction, when the bone around the tooth is healthy and there is no infection. More often the socket is left to heal for about two to three months first, which gives the implant firmer bone to sit in. A temporary tooth can usually be worn in the meantime, so you are not left with a gap at the front.
Your implant, step by step
- Free consultationThe implant dentist examines your mouth and explains whether an implant suits you.
- X-rays and planningX-rays and, where needed, a 3D scan show the bone, so the implant position can be planned.
- Placing the implantThe post is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic.
- HealingUsually three to six months while the bone bonds to the implant. A temporary tooth can often be worn in the meantime.
- Abutment and impressionThe connector is fitted and an impression or scan is taken for the crown.
- Your new toothThe final crown is fitted and your bite is checked.
Looking after your implant for years
An implant cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up, a condition called peri-implantitis. Untreated, it can loosen the implant. Clean around the implant every day as you would a natural tooth, use interdental brushes, and come for check-ups and cleaning so problems are found early. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard protects the crown.
Risks and side effects
- Swelling, bruising and discomfort for a few days after the implant is placed.
- Infection around the implant, and in some cases the implant not bonding with the bone and needing to be removed.
- Rarely, nerve injury in the lower jaw causing numbness or tingling of the lip or chin.
- In the upper back jaw, the implant can come close to the sinus and may need extra treatment.
- Gum disease around implants can develop over time without good cleaning and check-ups.
- Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes raise the risk of implant problems.
Results vary from person to person. Your implant dentist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.
Aftercare
- Follow the instructions you are given after surgery, including any medicines prescribed.
- Eat soft food and chew on the other side for the first days.
- Do not smoke while the implant heals.
- Clean around the implant every day with a soft brush and interdental brushes.
- Come for regular check-ups so the gum and bone around the implant can be monitored.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a dental implant cost at Healthpoint?
A dental implant with its crown starts from AED 3,500 per tooth. Bone grafts and extractions, if needed, are priced separately. You get a written plan and price first.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
Cover varies widely. Many plans exclude implants or need pre-approval before treatment, so check your table of benefits. If your insurer asks for pre-approval, we give you the treatment plan and estimate it needs, and you claim back what it approves with our invoice and medical report.
How long does the whole treatment take?
Usually three to six months from placing the implant to fitting the final crown, longer if a bone graft is needed.
Does it hurt?
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most people have swelling and some discomfort for a few days afterwards, which is usually managed with ordinary pain relief.
How long do dental implants last?
There is no fixed lifespan. How long an implant lasts depends mainly on gum health, smoking, diabetes control and regular check-ups, where the gum and bone around it are checked. The crown on top can wear and may need replacing over time.
Am I too old for implants?
Age alone is not usually a barrier. What matters is your general health, your gums and the amount of bone. The implant dentist checks this at your consultation.
Can implants hold a denture in place?
Yes. Two or more implants can be used to hold a denture more securely. Ask about this at your consultation.
Can I get an implant the same day my tooth is removed?
Sometimes, if the bone is healthy and there is no infection. Often the socket heals for about two to three months first. The implant dentist tells you which applies after examining the tooth and X-ray.
What if I do not have enough bone for an implant?
A bone graft, or a sinus lift in the upper back jaw, can often rebuild enough bone. It adds time and cost, and is priced at your consultation. If grafting does not suit you, a bridge or denture may be the better option.
Can I have implants if I smoke or have diabetes?
Often yes, but both raise the risk of the implant not healing well. Stopping smoking before and after surgery helps, and diabetes should be well controlled. Tell the implant dentist so your treatment can be planned around it.
