Types of braces

All fixed braces use small brackets glued to the front of your teeth and a thin wire that slowly moves them into place. The difference is how they look, how the wire is held and what they cost.

  • Metal bracesStainless steel brackets held to the wire with small elastic ties. The most affordable option and the most common choice for teenagers and adults.
  • Ceramic bracesTooth-coloured brackets that are harder to notice. They cost more, and the elastic ties can stain from coffee, tea and curry, so they need a little more care.
  • Self-ligating bracesBrackets with a small built-in clip that holds the wire instead of elastic ties. They are easier to keep clean around and adjustments can be quicker.

Prefer something removable? Ask about clear aligners at your consultation. Not every bite suits aligners, and the orthodontist will tell you honestly which option fits your teeth. Our guide to aligners and braces compares the two.

How much do braces cost in Dubai?

The price depends on how much your teeth need to move, which brackets you choose and how long treatment takes. At Healthpoint you get a written plan and the full price at your free consultation, before you commit to anything.

What you pay from start to finish

A braces price usually covers fitting the brackets and wire. Over the whole treatment you also pay for each adjustment visit and for retainers at the end. This table shows every part of the cost at Healthpoint.

The orthodontist estimates how long your case should take and gives you the total at your consultation. Our guide to the total cost of braces explains how to compare quotes from different clinics.

Who braces can help

Braces correct crowded or crooked teeth, gaps, an overbite, an underbite and a crossbite. They also make teeth easier to clean, which helps protect your gums.

There is no upper age limit. Adults can have braces as long as their teeth and gums are healthy, which the dentist checks first. Gum disease or untreated cavities are treated before the braces go on.

Braces for children and teenagers

Orthodontists suggest a first check of a child's bite at around age 7, when problems with jaw growth or crowding can be spotted early. Most children who need braces start between about 10 and 14, once most of their adult teeth have come through. Starting at the right time can make treatment shorter and simpler.

Some insurance plans cover braces for children up to a limit, so check your child's table of benefits. Children's check-ups at Healthpoint are free, and you can stay with your child during the visit. See dentistry for children.

How long braces take

Most people wear braces for about 18 to 24 months. Your own time depends on:

  • how crowded or crooked the teeth are, and whether the bite also needs correcting;
  • your age, because teeth in adults can take a little longer to move;
  • coming to every adjustment on time, since missed visits slow progress;
  • looking after the brackets, because each broken bracket can set treatment back;
  • wearing elastics, if the orthodontist gives you any, as instructed.

Your braces, step by step

  1. Free consultationThe orthodontist examines your teeth and bite and explains your options.
  2. RecordsX-rays, photos and impressions or a scan of your teeth, so your treatment can be planned properly.
  3. Your plan and priceYou receive the treatment plan, how long it should take and the full cost.
  4. FittingThe brackets and wire are fitted in one visit of about one to two hours.
  5. AdjustmentsShort visits every four to six weeks to tighten or change the wire.
  6. Removal and retainersThe braces come off, your teeth are polished and you get retainers to hold the new position.

Living with braces

  • Easy to eatRice, pasta, soft bread, eggs, fish, cooked vegetables, yoghurt, bananas, and fruit or meat cut into small pieces.
  • AvoidNuts, popcorn, ice, hard sweets, toffee, chewing gum, and biting straight into apples, corn on the cob or hard bread.

Brush after every meal, angling the brush above and below the brackets, and use small interdental brushes or a water flosser between them. A fluoride mouthwash helps protect the enamel around the brackets. If you play contact sports, wear a mouthguard made for braces.

After braces: retainers

Teeth tend to drift back towards their old position, especially in the first year after braces. Retainers stop this. There are two kinds:

  • Removable retainerA thin clear tray you wear as the orthodontist advises, usually full-time at first and then at night.
  • Fixed retainerA thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. It cannot be forgotten, but needs careful cleaning around it.

Many people wear a retainer at night for years to keep their result. Bring your retainers to your check-ups so the fit can be checked.

Started your braces in another country?

Many of our patients began their treatment back home and need someone to continue it in Dubai. Bring any records you have, such as X-rays, photos or your treatment plan. The orthodontist checks your teeth and brackets, then explains the next steps and the price before any adjustment. Read more about braces adjustment and transfer cases.

Risks and side effects

  • Soreness and pressure for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment.
  • Brackets and wires can rub the inside of the lips and cheeks at first. Orthodontic wax helps.
  • If teeth are not cleaned well around the brackets, white marks and cavities can form.
  • Brackets can come loose, especially with hard or sticky food, and need re-gluing.
  • In a small number of patients the tooth roots become slightly shorter during treatment.
  • Teeth can move back after treatment if retainers are not worn as advised.

Results vary from person to person. Your dentist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.

Aftercare

  • Brush after meals and use small interdental brushes between the brackets.
  • Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods such as nuts, toffee and ice.
  • Keep orthodontic wax with you for any wire or bracket that rubs.
  • Message us on WhatsApp if a bracket comes loose or a wire pokes, so we can see you.
  • Wear your retainers exactly as instructed once the braces are off.

Frequently asked questions

How much do braces cost at Healthpoint?

Metal braces start from AED 249, ceramic braces from AED 624 and self-ligating braces from AED 1,499. Adjustment visits are charged separately, from AED 150 each, usually every four to six weeks for 18 to 24 months, and retainers at the end start from AED 499. The orthodontist gives you the total for your case at the free consultation.

What is the difference between metal, ceramic and self-ligating braces?

Metal braces (from AED 249) use stainless steel brackets. Ceramic braces (from AED 624) use tooth-coloured brackets that are harder to notice. Self-ligating braces (from AED 1,499) hold the wire with a small built-in clip instead of elastic ties. The orthodontist recommends the type that suits your teeth and bite.

How long will I need to wear braces?

Most people wear braces for about 18 to 24 months. Mild cases can be shorter and complex cases longer. The orthodontist gives you an estimate for your teeth at the consultation.

Do braces hurt?

Most people feel pressure and some soreness for a few days after the braces are fitted and after each adjustment. Soft food and orthodontic wax help during those days.

Am I too old for braces?

No. Adults of any age can have braces if their teeth and gums are healthy. The dentist checks this with an exam and X-rays first.

Does insurance cover braces?

Usually not for adults. UAE health plans often exclude orthodontics, and some cover braces for children up to a limit. Check your table of benefits, and if your insurer asks for pre-approval, we give you the treatment plan it needs.

Do I need a retainer after braces?

Yes. Retainers hold your teeth in their new position. Without them, teeth tend to move back over time.

What should I avoid eating with braces?

Avoid hard, sticky and chewy food such as nuts, popcorn, ice, toffee and chewing gum, and do not bite straight into apples or corn on the cob. Cut food into small pieces and chew with your back teeth.

How do I clean my teeth with braces?

Brush after every meal with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles above and below the brackets. Clean between the brackets with small interdental brushes or a water flosser. The dental team shows you how at your fitting.

Can I have braces on only my top or bottom teeth?

Sometimes. If only one row of teeth is crooked and your bite is otherwise good, braces on one jaw may be enough and cost less. Often both jaws need treatment for the teeth to meet properly, so the orthodontist decides after examining your bite.
