When you might need a crown
A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. The dentist may recommend one when a tooth is badly broken or decayed, has a very large filling, or has had root canal treatment and is at risk of cracking. Crowns are also used on top of dental implants.
Choosing a crown material
- PFM (porcelain fused to metal)A metal base covered with tooth-coloured porcelain. Strong and the most affordable option.
- ZirconiaA very strong, metal-free ceramic. A good choice for back teeth that take heavy biting.
- E.maxA glass ceramic that lets light through like a natural tooth. Often chosen for front teeth.
- BridgeTwo or more crowns joined to a false tooth in between, to fill a gap. Each tooth in the bridge counts as one unit.
The dentist explains which material suits your tooth and your bite.
How much do crowns and bridges cost in Dubai?
At Healthpoint, PFM crowns start from AED 249, zirconia crowns from AED 499 and e.max crowns from AED 599 per unit. Bridges are priced the same way, per unit: each tooth in the bridge counts as one. If the tooth needs a root canal or a core build-up first, that is priced separately. You can pay in instalments with Tabby or Tamara, subject to their approval. The price list shows every item.
Your crown or bridge, step by step
- Free consultation and X-rayThe dentist checks the tooth and its root and explains your options.
- Preparing the toothUnder local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped so the crown can fit over it.
- Impression or scanA mould or digital scan is taken and the shade is matched to your teeth.
- Temporary crownA temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made by the dental laboratory.
- FittingThe final crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented in place.
Bridge or implant?
A bridge needs the teeth on either side of the gap to be shaped for crowns, while an implant replaces the missing tooth without touching its neighbours. A removable denture is another option. The dentist compares them with you at your consultation, including the cost of each.
Risks and side effects
- The tooth can feel sensitive to hot and cold for a few days after preparation.
- A tooth that has been prepared for a crown may later need root canal treatment.
- Porcelain can chip, and crowns can loosen and need re-cementing.
- Decay can still form where the crown meets the tooth if the area is not cleaned well.
- For a bridge, the supporting teeth are reshaped, which cannot be undone.
Results vary from person to person. Your dentist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.
Aftercare
- Avoid sticky and very hard food on a temporary crown.
- Brush twice a day and clean under a bridge with floss threaders or small interdental brushes.
- Avoid biting ice, nuts in their shells or bottle caps.
- Come for regular check-ups so the dentist can check the edges of the crown.
