When a tooth needs to come out

The dentist will always try to save a tooth first, but removing it can be the right choice when a tooth is broken beyond repair, badly decayed, very loose from gum disease, or causing repeated infections. Teeth are sometimes removed to make space for braces or before a denture is made.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth at the back of the mouth. When there is not enough room, they can grow at an angle or stay partly under the gum, which can cause pain, swelling and infection.

Simple extraction or surgical extraction?

  • Simple extractionFor a tooth that is fully visible in the mouth. It is loosened and removed with dental instruments.
  • Surgical extractionFor wisdom teeth and broken teeth. A small cut in the gum, and sometimes dividing the tooth into pieces, makes removal easier. Stitches may be placed.

How much does a tooth extraction cost in Dubai?

At Healthpoint, a simple extraction starts from AED 100 per tooth, and wisdom tooth removal is priced after the X-ray. The X-ray shows how the roots sit, which decides whether the tooth needs a simple or surgical extraction, and the dentist tells you the price before starting.

Your extraction, step by step

  1. Check-up and X-rayThe dentist checks the tooth, its roots and your medical history.
  2. NumbingLocal anaesthetic numbs the tooth and the surrounding area.
  3. Removing the toothYou feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Tell the dentist if you do.
  4. Gauze and aftercareYou bite on gauze to stop the bleeding and receive written aftercare instructions.

Please tell the dentist if you take blood thinners, have diabetes or heart problems, or are pregnant.

Replacing the gap

Once the area has healed, a missing tooth can be replaced with an implant, a bridge or a denture. Wisdom teeth do not usually need replacing.

Risks and side effects

  • Bleeding, swelling and discomfort for the first few days.
  • Dry socket: the blood clot comes away from the socket, causing pain from day two to four. It is more likely in smokers.
  • Infection of the socket, treated by the dentist.
  • For lower wisdom teeth, rarely, injury to a nerve causing numbness or tingling of the lip, chin or tongue, usually temporary.
  • For upper back teeth, rarely, an opening into the sinus that needs extra treatment.

Your dentist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.

Aftercare

  • Keep biting on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • For the first 24 hours, do not rinse, spit forcefully or drink through a straw.
  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours.
  • Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
  • Contact us if bleeding does not stop, swelling gets worse after day three, or you develop a fever.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tooth extraction cost at Healthpoint?

A simple extraction starts from AED 100 per tooth. Wisdom tooth removal depends on how the tooth sits, so the dentist confirms its price after the X-ray.

Does tooth extraction hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and usually managed with ordinary pain relief.

Should I have my wisdom teeth removed?

Only if they cause problems or are likely to, such as pain, swelling, decay or damage to the next tooth. Healthy, well-positioned wisdom teeth can stay.

Can I go to work after an extraction?

Many people return to work the next day after a simple extraction. After a surgical wisdom tooth removal, one or two days of rest is common.

What is dry socket?

It is when the blood clot comes away from the socket, causing a deep ache two to four days later. Avoid smoking and rinsing in the first day, and contact us if it happens.

Can you remove a tooth on the same day?

Often, yes, for a simple extraction after the check-up and X-ray. Wisdom teeth sometimes need a separate appointment.
