How clear aligners work
Each aligner is a slightly different shape, made from a digital plan of your teeth. Wearing one set for a week or two moves your teeth a small amount, then you switch to the next set. Over the course of treatment the trays move your teeth step by step into the planned position.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are often bonded to some teeth so the aligners can grip and move them. They are removed at the end of treatment.
What aligners can and cannot treat
- Usually suit alignersMild to moderate crowding, small gaps, teeth that moved back after braces, and many mild bite problems.
- Often need bracesSevere crowding, large jaw differences, teeth that need to turn a long way or move up and down a lot, and many complex bites.
Some cases start with aligners and need extra trays, called refinements, to finish. Others are better treated with braces from the start. The orthodontist tells you which applies to you after looking at your scan and X-rays.
Aligners or braces?
- Clear alignersHard to notice, removable for eating and brushing, fewer clinic visits. They only work if you wear them about 22 hours a day.
- BracesFixed to your teeth, so they work without you remembering to wear them. Often better for complex bites and usually lower in cost.
Not every bite can be treated with aligners. At your free consultation the orthodontist tells you honestly which option suits your teeth. Read more about braces, or compare cost, time and daily life in our guide to clear aligners and braces.
How much do clear aligners cost in Dubai?
The price depends on how much your teeth need to move and how many sets of aligners are needed. At Healthpoint, clear aligner treatment starts from AED 999. You get the full price with your treatment plan before you commit, and you can pay in instalments with Tabby or Tamara, subject to their approval. Retainers to keep your result are needed after treatment.
When you compare aligner quotes from different clinics, check what each one includes: the number of aligners, any refinement trays, check-up visits and retainers. Your written plan at Healthpoint lists what is included in the price.
How long aligner treatment takes
Many cases take between 6 and 18 months. Simple spacing or a few crooked front teeth can finish in a few months, while more crowding or bite correction takes longer. The biggest factor you control is wear time: aligners left out for a few hours a day move teeth more slowly, and the treatment can run over plan.
Teeth moved back after braces?
It is common for teeth to shift again years after braces, especially if retainers were not worn. Small amounts of movement, such as crowding of the lower front teeth, are often a good fit for a short course of aligners, sometimes only a few months long. The orthodontist checks your teeth and gums first, then you get a plan and price for the correction and new retainers to hold the result this time.
Aligners for teenagers
Teenagers can have aligners once their adult teeth are through, as long as they will wear them for about 22 hours a day. Some aligner brands have small wear indicators that fade over time, so parents and the orthodontist can see whether the trays are worn enough; ask whether yours will. If wear is likely to be a struggle, fixed braces are often the more reliable choice.

Daily life with aligners
- Eating: take the aligners out for every meal and snack, then brush or at least rinse before putting them back.
- Drinks: plain water is fine with aligners in. Take them out for coffee, tea, juice and soft drinks, which can stain the trays and trap sugar against your teeth.
- Speech: a slight lisp is common for the first day or two with a new set and usually passes quickly.
- Travel: carry your case, your current and previous sets and a travel toothbrush.
- Sport: you can usually keep aligners in, or wear a mouthguard instead for contact sports.
Risks and side effects
- Teeth usually feel pressure for a day or two with each new set of aligners.
- If aligners are not worn for long enough, teeth do not move as planned and treatment takes longer.
- Drinking anything other than plain water with aligners in can trap sugar and acid against the teeth and cause decay.
- Some cases need extra aligners or a switch to braces to finish.
- Teeth can move back after treatment if retainers are not worn as advised.
Results vary from person to person. Your orthodontist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.
Aftercare
- Wear your aligners about 22 hours a day and take them out only to eat, drink anything except water, and brush.
- Brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
- Rinse and gently brush the aligners every day, and keep them in their case when they are out.
- Keep your old set in case a new one is lost or cracked, and message us if that happens.
Frequently asked questions
How much do clear aligners cost at Healthpoint?
Clear aligner treatment starts from AED 999. You receive the full price with your treatment plan at the consultation.
How long does aligner treatment take?
Many cases take between 6 and 18 months, depending on how much the teeth need to move. The orthodontist gives you an estimate for your teeth.
How many hours a day do I wear aligners?
Usually 20 to 22 hours a day. You take them out only to eat, to drink anything other than plain water and to clean your teeth, so they stay in for most of the day and night.
Are aligners right for everyone?
No. Some bites move more reliably with braces. The orthodontist checks your teeth and recommends the option that suits them.
Can I eat with aligners in?
No. Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water, then brush before putting them back.
Do I need a retainer after aligners?
Yes. Retainers hold your teeth in their new position. Without them, teeth tend to move back over time.
Do aligners hurt?
Most people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two after switching to a new set, which shows the teeth are moving. Putting a new set in at bedtime helps you sleep through the first hours.
Can I drink coffee with my aligners in?
It is better not to. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and coffee and tea stain the trays and sit against your teeth. Take the aligners out, drink, rinse your mouth, then put them back.
What happens if I lose or break an aligner?
Put your previous set back in so your teeth do not move back, and message us. The orthodontist decides whether you move on to the next set early or need a replacement.
Will aligners change how I speak?
You may have a slight lisp for the first day or two with each new set. It usually passes quickly as your tongue gets used to the trays.
