When to bring your child

Dental associations recommend a child's first dental visit when the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday. Early visits are short and gentle. The dentist checks the teeth, looks for early signs of decay and gives you practical advice on brushing, feeding and teething, so your child gets used to the dentist before they ever need treatment.

Treatments we provide for children

  • Check-ups and cleaningA gentle check of teeth and gums, with cleaning to remove plaque and stains.
  • Fluoride applicationA fluoride varnish painted on the teeth to help protect them against decay.
  • FillingsTooth-coloured fillings for cavities in baby and adult teeth.
  • ExtractionsRemoving baby teeth that are badly decayed or not falling out on their own.

Ask us about fissure sealants, which protect the grooves of back teeth, and about when your child might benefit from braces.

How much does a children's dentist cost?

At Healthpoint, a child's consultation and check-up are always free. Children's fillings start from AED 99 per tooth. The dentist explains any treatment and its price to you before starting.

Why baby teeth matter

Baby teeth help children chew, speak clearly and smile with confidence, and they hold space for the adult teeth underneath. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and can affect the permanent teeth coming through, so it is worth treating even though they will fall out later.

Risks and side effects

  • Some children feel anxious at first. We go at your child's pace, and some treatments may be split over shorter visits.
  • After a filling, the lip and cheek stay numb for a few hours; watch that your child does not bite them.
  • Children with extensive decay or very high anxiety may need treatment under sedation or general anaesthetic, in which case we will refer you.

The dentist explains the options and risks for your child before any treatment.

Aftercare

  • Brush your child's teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste: a smear for under-threes, a pea-sized amount from age three.
  • Help or supervise brushing until about age seven or eight.
  • Keep sweets and sugary drinks to mealtimes, and avoid putting a baby to bed with milk or juice in a bottle.
  • Bring your child for a check-up every six months, or as the dentist advises.

Frequently asked questions

What age should my child first see a dentist?

When the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday.

Can I stay with my child during the visit?

Yes. Parents are welcome in the room, and many young children feel calmer with you there.

Do baby teeth really need fillings?

Often, yes. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and can affect the adult teeth underneath. The dentist explains what your child's teeth need.

My child is scared of the dentist. What can we do?

Tell us when you book. We keep the first visit simple and friendly, explain everything in a child-friendly way and go at your child's pace.

Can my child be treated under sedation or general anaesthetic?

Not at Healthpoint. We treat children while they are awake, with local anaesthetic when needed. If your child needs treatment under sedation or general anaesthetic, for example because of extensive decay or strong anxiety, we refer you to a clinic or hospital that provides it.

When should my child be checked for braces?

Many orthodontists suggest an assessment around age seven to nine. The dentist will tell you if your child should see our orthodontist.
