Before you decide

Every mouth is different, so these cases show what was possible for these patients, not what will happen in yours. How long treatment takes and how it ends depend on your teeth, your bite and wearing your retainers afterwards. Braces also carry risks:

  • Soreness and pressure for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment.
  • Brackets and wires can rub the inside of the lips and cheeks at first. Orthodontic wax helps.
  • If teeth are not cleaned well around the brackets, white marks and cavities can form.
  • Brackets can come loose, especially with hard or sticky food, and need re-gluing.
  • In a small number of patients the tooth roots become slightly shorter during treatment.
  • Teeth can move back after treatment if retainers are not worn as advised.

Results vary from person to person. Your dentist explains the risks for your own case before you decide.
