Braces adjustments: how often, what to expect and how to cope

Braces only work if they are adjusted regularly. This guide explains how often adjustments are needed, what happens at the visit, how to manage the soreness afterwards and what to do if a bracket or wire breaks between appointments.

Why braces need adjusting

The wire in your braces pushes your teeth with a gentle, steady force. As your teeth move, that force fades. At each adjustment the orthodontist tightens, bends or changes the wire so your teeth keep moving towards their planned position. Skipping adjustments does not end treatment sooner; it usually makes it longer.

How often you need an adjustment

Most people need an adjustment every four to six weeks. Early in treatment, thin flexible wires can sometimes stay in a little longer; later, when the bite is being fine-tuned, visits may be closer together. Your orthodontist tells you the right interval at each visit.

What happens at the visit

  1. CheckThe orthodontist looks at how your teeth have moved and checks your gums and cleaning.
  2. Old ties offThe small elastic ties holding the wire are removed, and the wire is taken out if it needs changing.
  3. New wire or bendsA new wire is fitted, or the current one is adjusted.
  4. New tiesFresh elastic ties hold the wire. Many patients choose new colours each time.
  5. RepairsAny loose brackets are re-glued and elastics are explained if you need them.

Most visits take 20 to 30 minutes.

Managing soreness after an adjustment

It is normal for your teeth to feel tender or achy for one to three days after an adjustment. To make those days easier:

  • Choose soft food such as rice porridge, soup, eggs, yogurt, pasta and well-cooked vegetables.
  • Take ordinary pain relief as directed on the pack, if you need it.
  • Put orthodontic wax on any bracket or wire that rubs your lips or cheeks.
  • Rinse with warm salt water if you have small mouth ulcers.

Problems between visits

  • Loose bracketNot urgent if it does not hurt. Call or message us and keep the bracket.
  • Wire pokingCover the end with wax and message us. Do not cut the wire yourself.
  • Lost elastic tieUsually not urgent; it will be replaced at your next adjustment.
  • Severe pain or swellingContact us the same day. See our emergency dentist page.

Travelling or moving during treatment

Tell us before a long trip so the orthodontist can plan your wire and timing around it. If you are moving to Dubai with braces from another country, bring your records; we continue treatment started elsewhere. See braces adjustment and transfer cases, where adjustment visits start from AED 150.

Frequently asked questions

Do braces adjustments hurt?

The visit itself is usually comfortable. Teeth often feel tender for one to three days afterwards, which soft food and ordinary pain relief help with.

What happens if I miss an adjustment?

Your teeth stop moving as planned and treatment usually takes longer. Book the next available appointment as soon as you can.

Can I eat normally after an adjustment?

Yes, but soft food is more comfortable for the first day or two. Avoid hard, sticky and chewy food throughout treatment.
